Hey Tim – I wanted to give you my thoughts on a couple of subjects you bring up from time to time. one is your hatred of the Dashboard. Now I’m with you on the wonders of menu bar apps, they’re glorious, and I love to have apps in the top of all my finder windows (I like keeping AppDelete, Preview (to make sure I don’t accidentally open Photoshop Elements and lose a half a day waiting for it to come up), but I also like the Dashboard. Why do I like it? I’m not one of those maniacs that has their entire screen covered with apps that they SWEAR they need at the drop of a hat, but there ARE some apps that really fit in the Dashboard to me.
Let’s say your spouse is coming in a plane. you could open aa.com and look up the flight and every half hour os so flip over to the web browser, find the tab you opened and hit the refresh button…OR you could just use the fight tracker and all you have to do is hit one key and you very quickly get an update on her flight – even with a cute graphic of where the plane is relative to a map of the US. I put that app away when I’m not tracking a flight, so it doesn’t take up time when i don’t care about it. Do you have a faster, better way to track flights?
Another thing I use the Dashboard for constantly is a month at a glance calendar. I love to be able to just push one button and know what day of the week some date is. Is there a better faster way to get this info than a single button push? Something that’s not floating over my desktop when I don’t even need it like a Yahoo widget? I keep the calendar in my active dashboard at all times.
Maybe this next one is just laziness, but I keep a cheesy calculator handy in my Dashboard for quick calculations. I prefer my reverse polish notation calculator from nonpareil.brouhaha.com so I can have my memorable HP 11C on screen, but it opens up in the off status, so I have to turn it off, and then it gets an error message I have to clear, so that’s about 7 keystrokes even using quicksilver to launch it, so the cheesy one will do until someone finds me an RPN calculator for the Dashboard – anyone out there know of one?

Timeline is a simple little application that does nothing but make quick, jaw-dropping timelines. My review is of version 2.0 that just recently was released. When you first load up Timeline, it presents a simple interface that allows you to pick a theme (I like gradient style “Pleather” theme) and a data source which can be any one of several applications or your own custom data set. Setting up a new Timeline is that simple.
After my daughter gave birth to my first grandson in November, I was a proud grandfather to say the least. And, as any proud Grandfather would do, I gave my daughter my old camcorder and I went shopping for a new one. I had just about talked myself into an expensive,HD model when I saw [...]

iStabilize opens the video in a very standard looking player with play, rewind, fast forward, and timer menus across the bottom. There’s also a couple of buttons that allow you to mark the in/out points for the area of the video you want to stabilize. I’ve now described everything in this software that was intuitive and easy to understand. I was lost from this point onward where I was forced to reduce myself to the dreaded act of reading the documentation! You know how I hate that, but for the love of shareware, I bit the bullet and started reading.

Before I went to lawschool, I used to to pay the bills playing my saxophone. At the time, I was pretty knowledgeable about recording technology. Now if you fast forward 20 years, I’ve been reduced to a complete novice. An eager learner perhaps, but still a novice. Up until very recently I did all of my audio recording on my Mac using Soundtrack. Don’t get me wrong. Soundtrack is a brilliant bit of code. But it is also very expensive and for most applications, extraordinary overkill on the level of smashing a walnut with a pile driver.
With this in mind, I’ve been playing with Amadeus Pro. This program really is a breath of fresh air for someone like me who generally only needs a simple audio recording and editing program. Behind the simple interface, however, Amadeus Pro has some powerful editing tools, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

By Danny Greg: This week I took a look at the invoice application “Billings” from MarketCircle at Billings2.com. Recently, I have started doing some work as a freelance, cross platform, software developer and so I needed a decent invoicing application, Billings immediately caught my eye. The application is essentially in 3 parts: The timers, these [...]
By Chris Marshall: Candy Bar 3 really serves no useful purpose. It costs $29 and if you want to buy an application that saves you time, makes life easier, enhances your skills etc. then don’t waste your money. To make matters worse the site and instructions read like some secret society, that was established long [...]
