Chris – the problem with arguing with you is that you think things through very carefully and you make really good points that are hard to dispute. 2 weeks ago you gave your analysis of the 3G iPhone and everything you said made sense. I was particularly intrigued by the example from your Total Quality Management days (i remember those days too!) where your instructor compared a plastic bag to a nicely designed leather bag and asked which was the higher quality bag – and only after told you the requirement was to carry dirty groceries. (I did kind of wonder how your groceries got dirty though – maybe messy was what you meant?) Anyway, your point in bringing up this example was that it’s important to take into account your own personal requirements before jumping to something like the iPhone. I agree with you 100%.

On long trips, pre-iPod, pre-Sega Game Gear, etc., I used to bring along this handheld electronic Nintendo game – part of the Game and Watch series – called FIRE (youtube clip) . The objective was to rescue victims jumping out of a burning building by moving a stretcher back and forth to bounce the jumpers into an ambulance. Like other small potable games, this could easily fit in a pocket as well. It took two LR-43 or SR-43 batteries, was the size of a playing card, like the iPod Classic, but half the thickness. It had an “old skool” LCD screen and basically sported one game and a clock with an alarm. I played that game for hours during several long-haul road trips through the states, and a couple of times on flights overseas. I carried it right up until I got my first video iPod, and though I don’t take it with me everywhere now, I still have it because it’s completely addictive and wonderfully portable.

This week I am looking at a web service called SugarSync. I am fortunate enough to have two Macs. I keep one at home and the other follows me around. To make matters even more confusing, there is a PC box on my desk at the office. My challenge was to figure a way to keep the files synced between these various computers without becoming a slave to a thumb drive. These are the kind of problems that make my little geek heart go pitter-patter, obsessing over making sure everything is in sync rather than doing any actual work.
I tried a variety of ways to solve this problem ranging from thumb drives to iDisk and I wasn’t particularly happy with any of them. My biggest problem with these solutions is the way they add steps to my workflow. I don’t want to have to think about copying and synchronizing files every time I move from one computer to the next. I just want it done. Like Picard in his dome-headed glory, I just want to look at my Mac and say “Make it So.”
This week we look at Live Interior 3D, SugarSync, PicLens and The Lounge plus much more. I want to thank you for downloading and listening to the podcast. I’ve had the opportunity to experience a few shoulder-to-shoulder situations in rush-hour transportation, but not on a regular basis like Darren does, so I can only imagine that less is better. It’s a definitely a huge incentive to pack light be it to minimize the electronic poundage, or in anticipation of limited space, or even just to draw less attention to what you’re carrying in a crowded subway/train car.

The last few years a term of art has been floating around the Mac community. You may have heard it. “The Delicious Generation” This phrase comes from a specific application called Delicious Library that released a few years ago and made a lot of people rethink Apple software design. Well recently the folks at Delicious Monster released Delicious Library 2 and it certainly lives up to the high standards set by its predecessor.
By Chris Marshall: Never say never so I would say that it is 95% unlikely that I will be ordering the new iPhone when it is released on the 11th July. I have been trying to figure out how best to describe the next generation iPhone and I think the best way to sum it [...]
