I have recently been looking at using online services to see if they would ‘enhance’ my workflow, back up strategy etc. I have written already about MobileMe and the total mess that Apple have made of it (and still are doing by the way!) but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel in terms of adding value. Having recently upgraded, jailbroken, and handed over my iPhone to Sands I am starting to figure out how we will benefit from it.
I was all set to have Tim send me a recorded segment, but he claims that the interview we did a few weeks ago was his segment. In comparison, Tim simply carries his Blackberry. (I’m hoping he carries his charger cable, too.)
It’s interesting to see these extremes – Allison brought up a good point in her commentary (also a few weeks ago) about the purse thing… I think it definitely has something to do with the need to fill up space. Some people feel very compelled to pack in everything they can, be it out of necessity or not, and some people like to be minimal. This not only goes for what you carry, but also what you collect.

Since the first day I took my iPhone of the box a year ago, I’ve been waiting for iPhone OmniFocus to arrive. It was, and remains to be, remarkable to me that Apple still hasn’t created a native to-do list management system for the iPhone.
Well, with the opening of the applications store, and my willingness to part with $20, my wish has finally come true. I have OmniFocus on my iPhone. I have now been using it a few weeks and thought I’d share some of my initial impressions.
This week we look at freeware for the Mac and adventures in the iPhone 3G plus much more. I want to thank you for downloading and listening to the podcast. I am one of “those” people. You know … the kind of people that use Apple Mail stationery. Now before the geek storm troopers raid my house and rip my Apple nerd card from my shaking hands, I don’t use stationary all the time. Just occasionally. Like when a friend invites me over for a nice dinner I’ll send a stationary “Thank You” or when sending out an announcement to family members concerning posting pictures to the web. For occasions like this, the Apple Mail stationery fits the bill perfectly.
If you’ve been a regular reader of Surfbits for the past years, you’ll remember that once or twice I mentioned my love for Flight Sims. It started from my PC days when I was working for AOL in their gaming department, specifically in the Flight Sims. In those days we would clear all the add-on planes and scenery files that AOL members would create and upload for Microsoft’s Flight Sim. Those days are long gone for me, but I still remember the hours I’d spend with a flight stick, throttle and rudder pedals trying to land on a bobbing carrier in the North Atlantic.
I thought those days would be lost forever until I recently discovered Austin Meyer’s X-Plane 9 by Laminar Research. They tell you that X-Plane is the world’s most comprehensive, powerful flight simulator, and has the most realistic flight model available for personal computers. After spending a couple weeks with the sim, I think I agree. Let’s look at the list of features and then you’ll understand what makes X-Plane 9 a truly jaw-dropping experience for an old “simmer” like myself.
I know several people who are getting an iPhone 3G but as yet they haven’t gotten it! I have also heard some instances of customers reserving an iPhone online for collection in-store, only to be turned away on the day as they didn’t have enough stock.
As for me, I’m currently very happy with my iPod Touch but I think it’s highly likely my wife and I will be purchasing his and hers iPhones in September.
I didn’t manage to upgrade my iPod until the Saturday morning. But since then I’ve downloading and dissecting apps on a daily basis.

There are a plethora of freeware Mac maintenance applications out there in the real world, which is a bit ironic because OSX really needs little maintenance beyond what it performs on itself. For example, if you leave your Mac on, it will perform all the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts that it needs to stay healthy and alert. Even when you shut it down, OSX Tiger and Leopard are smart enough to realize that it missed running it’s scripts while it was down, so it will run them as soon as you boot it back up again.
It can never be said that Apple understands when it made a mistake, and they made one or two big ones in the last week. If you read my arcticle called “Just How Dumb Can Apple Be, you’ll know that the conversion from .Mac to MobileMe has been anything but smooth. One of the things I like about Apple is their ability to make things right when they know they screwed things up. So today we’ve gotten the word from Apple that they want to kiss and make up for the MobileMe disaster.
Text editors come in all shapes and sizes. They can be 800 pound guerrillas like BBEdit (www.barebones.com), or they can be as simple and as plain as Vi. What is it about editors that interest us so much? Why do we search the file archives and download almost every new text editor we hear about? I think a text editor is like a good pair of shoes, we love them when we find the right fit, but a text editor that doesn’t fit our needs can become a real sore spot in a hurry. Plus, like shoes, we need a different one for different occasions. All this is my prelude for this month’s freeware article, the topic is text editors and I’m going to share my favorite freeware editors with you. As always, I want you to share your favorites with me.

As I sit here reading a long list of emails, blogs, major news articles and twitters all bemoaning the fact that nothing is working right today for Apple, I just shake my head and ask, “Just How Dumb Can Apple Be?”.
