Of course I went into system preferences to turn the brightness down on the display, but this still wasn’t enough, so in my searching on the web I came across a little app that pretty much as Tim likes to say “does one thing and does it well”. The app is called Shades from charcoaldesign and it’s free.

About 10 years ago, when speech recognition was first being introduced to the masses, I tried it out. It was terrible. You … had … to … put … a … space … between … every … word. While those initial experiments were fun, the technology ultimately came up short. I work on a PC at the office and a few years ago I tried again. This second attempt was much more successful. The Dragon Dictate engine on the PC software made huge strides. No longer do you have to put spaces between words. You can speak naturally and, with some training, the computer gets very good at understanding your voice. I write for a living and Dragon Dictate quickly became a regular part of my computing experience.

This week I’m going do a review of Blow Up 2 software from Alien Skin.
Now you might say to yourself, how cool is that, there’s software that you can just blow everything up and it will look perfect. Well, that’s really not the case. It’s really better to shoot high quality photographs.
It’s when you need to crop and enlarge you can start having problems. When you starting blowing photographs up by just increasing image size or DPI in Photoshop, Elements or your favorite image editing program you can start to have a drop off in quality.

It’s no secret that we love the Flip Video Cams. For a video camera that small, the pictures were very sharp and included sound and basic editing. What could be better then that? How about a tiny little Flip with HD quality video? Welcome the Flip MinoHD.

The Flip MinoHD is the world’s smallest high definition camcorder at just over three oz., this remarkably slim camcorder makes capturing and sharing HD video easy and affordable. Whenever I see the Bento software package on the shelves, my first thought is always of a lovely Japanese lunch. (Bento or bento box are those thin plastic or wooden boxes that are divided into little compartments containing different portions of food, primarily Japanese.)

The developers at FileMaker have cleverly named this application because in essence this software organizes your information just like a bento box: something simple in it’s elegance, compartmentalized and clear, but also can be elaborately arranged and there’s plenty of complexity in flavors depending on what you put into it!

I reviewed Mail Act-On last year explaining it is one of the most useful utilities on my computer. With the recent release of version 2, that hasn’t changed. For the uninitiated, Mail Act-On installs itself as a preference in the Apple Mail client. It allows you to assign keystrokes to repeated actions and rules when dealing with your inbox and, with version 2, outbox. For instance, after reviewing an e-mail, there are a limited number of things I will do with it. I will either deal with it and file it, put it in my “action” folder, or delete it. Each of these require me to drag the e-mail over and place it in the proper folder. This works fine if you don’t mind taking your hand off the keyboard and using the mouse to drag it over and if you’re accurate enough to make sure that you actually drop it in the right folder. For those who use hierarchical folders to sort their Mail, this can be even more difficult. No matter how you slice it, this process takes time.

We all have our favorite earbuds or headsets, they can easily cost $100 or more. That’s fine, I know that for those long trips a comfortable earbud or headset that delivers rich bass and exciting trebles is well worth the price. This week I wanted to talk about something that I depended on VERY heavily over the last few months and I’ve been wanting to talk about a really long time: my glorious Etymotic Hf2 High-fidelity | Hands-free noise isolating headset + earphones.
Since losing my dear old car back in May, I had pledged to riding my bike during the summer. I decided to treated myself to a set of Etymotic’s hf2’s because I’ve always been in love with my ER6i’s. The etymotic brand has always been a comfort to my ears, both in sound and in wearability. (I’m sure I’ve mentioned about the time I travelled and slept in hostels where these were able to block out a room full of 100 people, more than half who were snoring.)
Because I had the new iPhone, I also wanted to have the ability for a handsfree set of headphones, and was delighted to know not only did Etymotic produce a compatible noise-isolating set of earphones, but that they were iLounge.com’s Best in Show for 2008. By iLounge’s review, the Etymotic hf2s actually combine the high end $330 ER-4P earphones with an iPhone ready microphone and remote control button. It’s listed as compatible with the Blackberry Curve and other music phones with a 3.5mm/4-contact phone + stereo plug and the nano4G although I haven’t had the opportunity to try.
In any case, I happily shelled out the $179 for a set (remember this means about a trillion dollars in Canadian funds, plus shipping & handling.)
