Earlier this week Surfbits.com was shutdown for a few hours due to a Bandwidth Exceeded warning. In the 5 plus years that I’ve been doing this blog, I’ve always had the same hosting plan and I’ve never exceeded a monthly bandwidth limit.

After increasing the Bandwidth and getting back online, I went through the log files to see if anything odd might have caused the spike in bandwidth and all I could find was that for the month of January I had more visitors to my Web site then every before.

So I wanted to thank you for visiting the blog and reading the reviews we offer on all things Mac. I keep doing this blog because I love the Mac and its software and hardware that third party developers keep giving us. I also love to hear from you. Please keep visiting and please share your comments with us about the products we review here at Surfbits. As I say on the podcast each week, “We love to hear from you.”

A common battle cry among experienced Mac users is the plea for more power to the built-in Finder application. As a result, there is no shortage of third-party solutions. I seem to collect them like some people collect stamps. I’m not all that unhappy with the built-in Finder. I just love the ability to stretch the geek muscles.

One particularly good file management application is BinaryNights’ Forklift, which I previously reviewed. The gang at BinaryNights has been hard at work improving Forklift and with the release of version 1.6, I thought it was time to kick the tires, again.

I have mentioned before how much I love Toast but with Toast 10 Pro they have certainly raised the bar even higher!

The latest version helps greatly enhance and extend Mac OSX and iLife applications with a broad range of additional capabilities for creating, sharing, and enjoying personal digital media content.

Toast 10 Titanium Pro, to give it its full and rather grand name, is the Rolls Royce offering with some rather intriguing third-party applications included over and above the Toast 10 Premium product (see below for full feature list). The Pro version is very much targeted at the advanced user, with a heavy bias on the photo & video enthusiasts, designers and creative people, and …… High Definition and Blu Ray users; as Pro includes a very handy plug in which allows you to authour HD video content on to standard DVDs and Blu-ray Discs.

When I first got a Mac I thought that the Finder was so much better than anything I had ever experienced on a Windows PC it never dawned on me to consider an alternative. Over the years Apple have fiddled a little with it (Cover Flow for example), but basically have left it well alone.

While this may well be OK for the majority of users, the more experienced Mac users have long bemoaned the lack of a more ‘powerful’ Finder substitute that would allow them to assign colours to labels, change the Font size, unlink the toolbar and sidebar, move stuff around easier etc.

Here’s the problem set up – how often do you find yourself wanting to drag a file from one window to the other? Pretty much every day at least, right? You have one window open, but you have to open the new window, but then it’s on top of the other window, and then you click back to the first window, slide it over to the left, bring in the right edge, then click back to the other window, make it more narrow so you can then slide it to the right side to make room to see the first window. Not that hard, but that’s probably 20 seconds you waste every time you try to move a file!

I am not a big gamer at all. I enjoy the occasional play, but tend to quickly get bored, assuming I can figure them out in the first place, but I recently came across a game that, rather like a ‘perfect storm‘ brought together all three aspects:

  • It is about rescuing kittens
  • It is on the iPhone
  • It is simple enough for even me to play

One of SoundSoap’s powerful feature is the “learn noise” function which automatically determines the noise contained in a file.  Suprisingly enough it only needs 2 seconds of the background noise to sample to set the Noise Tuner, and Noise Reduction knob automatically.  The Noise Tuner is the threshold, and the Noise Reduction is the amount of reduction applied to the frequencies filtered by the Noise Tuner.  Once noise has been filtered you have an option to listen to the filtered noise only, and adjust the Noise tuner and Reduction.  There are two sliders, one to eliminate clicks and crackles, and another slider labeled “enhance” which can be used to boost frequencies and tone to any degraded media files.

Now Peak Express 6 is renowned for being the first application to support direct file transfers from your iPhone or iPod Touch, and via their app, iProRecorder, which costs $2.99 from the app store. Since I have the first gen Touch I decided not to buy the app, but users of iProRecorder know that they can wirelessly send their recordings from their devices directly onto their Macs and into Peak Express for total manipulation.

I realized that there is one product that, although I got it in a Mac software bundler, I pretty much use all the time. Now I think there are other solutions out there but I do like the interface and options that this application gives me. So what on earth am I talking about? CoverSutra.

You heard right CoverSutra. This little app links into your iTunes app and can be used as a controller from wherever you currently are to control your tunes. The application can also use a neat little CD cover case that floats on your desktop and displays the art work for your currently playing Podcast or Album artwork if it’s Music that you’re listening to.
