I’ve always found Apple’s Font Book application to be the ugly stepsister of the native Apple applications. It just doesn’t have the polish of most Mac applications. It seems everytime I need to find a unique font for a graphic or presentation, Font Book gets in my way.

This is what led me to Bohemian Coding’s Fontcase. Fontcase looks like something designed by Apple. Specifically, if the iTunes team made a font manager, it would look a lot like Fontcase.

Allison Sheridan here of the NosillaCast Podcast hosted over on smileonmymac.com. I love how you can organize your snippets into groups, so I have a whole slew of Honda Bob snippets all piled up together so they’re easy to find. I have his email address and website both in full html, and even the Honda Motor Company disclaimer in there.

But for reasons that are not entirely clear to me, I also use RapidoWrite. In that tool I really like that I can trigger the snippets with a return – when I type a few characters, like pop for example, a nice grey HUD sort of window comes up showing me what I would get if I hit a return, in that case pop would trigger Podcasting on Podcasting). Instead of automatically filling it in like some others, RapidoWrite gives me the choice every time.

This week I’m looking at the Focal XS 2.1 computer and iPod speakers system. I listen to a lot of music and I’ll admit I’m a snob when it comes to audio equipment. I want speakers that sound great and look fantastic. The Focal speaker system is a high-end entry into the iPod and Apple computer market. And by “high end”, I’m talking $600.

These speakers look superb. The cabinets are solid and the cables are cloth wrapped. They were obviously designed with the current crop of iMacs in mind. Each unit has just the right combination of silver bezel and black body to make you think it was designed in a hidden lab in Cupertino. Additionally, one of the satellites includes a standard iPod dock. Using this dock, you can either sync your iPod to your computer or play directly into the speakers. This is controlled by a toggle switch behind the right satellite speaker. Keeping them next to my desktop machine it was no trouble for me to depress the button but this could be a problem depending on how you set them up. It also includes a simple remote that magnetically will attach itself to the satellite post. Neat.

A company called AppleTV&More has given AppleTV owners another option to bring more functionality to their AppleTV viewing. They’ve taken the open source project Patchstick and added a few plug-ins of their own. The whole idea behind the project is to have your Patchstick and plug-ins update themselves without the need to re-install each and [...]

Image Doctor 2 installed without a hitch using the current version of Leopard and Photoshop CS4.

We all have good photos that we want to turn into great photos. What makes the transition from good to great takes much dedicated skill using Photoshop CS4 or some other sophisticated imaging editor.

All of the above gets incredibly simplified with Alien Skin’s Image Doctor 2. Like me, I am sure you have some digital photos that contain some components that either should be removed or changed in some way:

Smart Fill: Allows you to remove unwanted objects within your photo simply.

Dust & Scratch Remover: Got an image with dust or an old scanned image that has some scratches. Gone baby gone!

Blemish Concealer: Use this filter to remove distinct skin blemishes, such as pimples, moles, and birthmarks.

Skin Softener This filter helps clear up oily patches of skin, wrinkles, splotchy redness, and rough skin spots.

JPEG Repair The JPEG Repair filter helps fix the effects of over-compression in low-quality JPEG images. Use this filter to fix blocky areas and other effects that occur when JPEGs are saved in low quality.

The contained manual simply shows you how to execute all of the above. The filters offer amazing results and make using the software package fun. Although not cheap, $199.00 is a solid investment if you like me love to take pictures and then enhance them to make them look beautiful. Also, many of the effects can also be achieved by spending hundreds of hours learning Photoshop skills. Alien Skin’s software negates the hours and offers professional looking results.

Tim asked me to take a look at the TubeStick Hybrid from Equinux.com. I wasn’t sure what TubeStick was when I said yes, but since when did that stop me? I did a little bit of research and discovered that TubeStick is a way to decode and deliver TV signals to your Mac and iPhone. It’s basically a TV tuner.

tubestick and antenna plugged into a macbookFirst let me explain that TubeStick is the hardware that makes this possible and The Tube is the software that drives it. TubeStick is a USB device about twice as big as a normal USB thumbdrive. They include a USB extender cable so if it’s blocking other ports on your connector you can make some space, and that’s a real nice feature. Tubestick has a coaxial connector on it just begging to have a cable plugged into it. That’s one way you can go, to plug your cable tv cable right in. Another option is to use the included antenna which is really quite beautiful. It’s a coax cable with a very cute white standing antenna about 6 inches tall. A third option is to use the included cable adapter that has a micro-USB connector on one end, and a four tail cable with the red/yellow/white composite connectors on it and one for s-video.

By Chris Marshall:

Using Balsamiq Mockups ($79) feels like you are drawing, but it’s digital, so you can tweak and rearrange controls easily, and the end result is much cleaner. Teams can come up with a design and iterate over it in real-time in the course of a meeting.

I am in no way a Software Developer, Designer, Engineer or any other type of Software person at all. The closest I ever come is when I have an idea that I want someone to develop, or get involved in a project that includes the development of a new application.

As such I may well be the wrong person to review Balsamiq Mockups in that I am not a ‘heavy’ user at all, but on the other hand I may well be an ideal reviewer in that I use it infrequently, and am a very basic user indeed. Basically as I see it, if I can use it and it works for me, then I have little doubt that it will be useful for you!

mockups_fpajpg

Let me say right up that the interface is very cool indeed, funky even, with a really good ‘hand drawn’ feel to it, and simple drag and drop as you would expect.

But do you know what? I really did find a use for it way beyond my initial expectation. I spend a lot of time ‘designing’ web sites and blogs, well that may be a slight over exageration of the word design, but I do spend a lot of time trying to identify and explain layouts, uses for, plugins etc etc for web sites and blogs and I found Balsamiq Mockups remarkably useful for this. Of course the toolbar is full of Mac and Blog type icons to help you do this, so don’t for one minute think that it is only for Software Developers.

I hazard a guess that anyone that doodles with a pen and paper to start the design process for anything with a GUI will find Balsamiq Mockups useful, and remarkably easy to use. For me it was a case of jump straight in and away we go, which makes it a brilliant application anyway! I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was easier or quicker than using a pencil and paper, but it isn’t an inconvenience either.

Of course it uses Adobe Air, so some may not like it at all ……

What they say about themselves

POWERFUL AND SCALABLE
With 75 pre-built controls to choose from, you can design anything from a super-simple dialog box to a full-fledged application, from a simple website to a Rich Internet Application.

SPICE UP YOUR WIKI
Mockups is tightly integrated with Atlassian Confluence, Atlassian JIRA and XWiki. We even have a desktop version for when you are offline.

GET IT DONE AS A TEAM
Product managers, designers, developers and even clients can now work together in the same tool to quickly iterate over software mockups, before writing code.

FOCUS ON FUNCTIONALITY
Balsamiq Mockups intentionally uses hand-drawn UI elements, so that people don’t get attached to “that pretty color gradient” or think that your mockup has actual code behind it and is “practically done”.

DESIGNED FOR COLLABORATION
Mockups is designed to help you and your team or clients iterate on wireframes as early in the process as possible, when it’s cheapest to do so. Here are some of the features that support this goal:

  • extreme speed: you can create and tweak designs in real time during a design discussion meeting, whether you’re all in the same room or sharing your screen in an online meeting.
  • a look no-one is afraid to criticize: wireframes created with Mockups are intentionally rough and low-fidelity. The idea is to encourage as much feedback as possible…no-one will think you’ll be offended by their input, they’ll know immediately that you just ‘threw it together’ quickly.
  • multiple ways to share and get feedback on your designs:
  • Mockups exports to common PNG images which can be emailed as attachments, easily embedded in a website or saved in a shared folder.
Mockups also exports to the clipboard, so that you can simply paste the snapshots to your Word or Powerpoint requirement documents and feature specifications.
If you are using a plugin version of Mockups, you will be able to embed your Mockups in your wiki pages or bug reports, with access control, versioning and all the great Web Office features you’ve come to love.
You can achieve near-real-time collaboration by coupling Mockups for Desktop with a “file sharing in the cloud” service like DropBox (learn more).
If your colleagues haven’t bought Mockups, they’ll still be able to import your XML code in the free online demo version, tweak it, export it back and email it to you.
We are currently developing an online version of Mockups (subscription-based), which will have commenting, versioning, access controls and all that good stuff. Let us know if you’d like to participate in the private beta program.
