The App I’m reviewing this week was something I found I needed when I couldn’t turn the brightness down enough on my iMac, yes you heard me I needed to turn the brightness down. As my daughter says when we turn her lights on in the morning to wake her up, “it’s blinding me”.
Of course I went into system preferences to turn the brightness down on the display, but this still wasn’t enough, so in my searching on the web I came across a little app that pretty much as Tim likes to say “it does one thing and does it well”. The app is called Shades from charcoaldesign and it’s free.
So after checking out the website I installed the app which installs it’s self into your system preferences, and basically allows you to turn the screen brightness right down to, well almost black. I don’t use this when I’m watching films or looking closely at photographic work and you may find the contrast doesn’t quite suit you. The system preferences give you choices for short cut keys whether to activate the menu icon, enable or disable shades or make the screen lighter or darker. You can also control the slider to some degree if you want to have it floating over your desktop, also a couple of choices over how the slider looks.
So once installed, start the app up and you can have either a sun or a pair of shades on your menu which you can hover over and increase or decrease your screen brightness. I like this app as it does just the job that I needed and I can recommend it. Go take a look at www.charcoaldesign.co.uk/shades, if you use it and like it make sure you send in a donation.
