Are you looking to break the bonds of Microsoft Word? Are the constant crashes and slow loading
times driving you crazy? Then the new Mellel version 2 may be the answer you’re looking for. Mellel 2.0 is a powerful, yet fast, full-featured word processor. I’ve watched Mellel grow in the last three years and this version has finally reached the level of a MS Word substitute.
Mellel has added many important feature in the new version. Mellel now supports up to 100 columns per page. They also give you column footnotes, spacing, color and gutters to make the presentation look professional. Ori Redler, the owner and developer of Mellel also gave us a new hyphenation dictionary and the ability to customize your dictionary to handle any spelling need. Mellel 2.0 now offers much improved support for importing RTF documents, including added support for headers and footers, images and graphics, columns, sections, and more. As a layout program, Mellel has improved with a “sections” tool that allows you to layout text in a specific section with a specific format such as columns, or highlighting. Then in order to enable you to position tables and graphics in a page, Mellel now supports automatic adjustment of table and graphics line spacing to the line spacing in the surrounding text. It’s the best feature you’re likely to never notice. On top of all of this, when you add background color, color with page styles, keep options, and keep with next options, you have one powerful text and layout editor.
Ori also gives you a great bunch of downloads on his website, http://www.redlers.com, including tips, tricks, fonts, styles, templates, and keyboard layouts. A single user’s license cost $49.00 and a family 5 user license costs only $69.00, with an educational license at only $34.99. You can learn about all the features and the improvements and bug fixes at the website here. Mellel has allowed me to delete Word of my Mac, give it a try for yourself and see if you may have waited for Word to open for the last time.

Check out Papyrus at http://www.rom-logicware.com/index.htm I hear it is another great substitute for Word.
Yes, Mellel is a great application and I use it in place of Word. However, if you’re creating long technical documents you might as well bite the bullet and learn LaTeX. At first, LaTeX looks impossible, but once you get over the initial hump you will never turn back. It’s a joy to see the output, and you don’t have to be an expert to get nicely styled documents. Almost everyone can notice the difference between Word and LaTeX.

How about Neoofice. This is available in older Neoofice/J with stable form for Classic mixed interface or a new alpha (plain Neooffice) which is now Cocoa based. Both are based on OpenOffice and are donation software. The latter-which seems to be very stable on my Panther, is compatible with Open Office 2.0 with the new features. This is real value-ware for the frugal computer user!
