We all love to hear about Apple’s next big thing. That’s why rumor sites are so popular in the Mac community. Over the past few years it’s been more and more apparent that Steve Jobs has a few favorites in the press corps that seem to get the heads-up long before the other Tech journalists. Walt Mossberg from the Wall Street Journal is one of those favorites. When Walt says that Apple is bringing out a new item, I take it as gospel. Here is what Mossberg had to say in his column today.

Tightly linking hardware, software and Web services propelled Apple to a huge success with its iPod. Microsoft, meanwhile, has struggled to make its component model work on these devices and, in a telling sign, is using the Apple end-to-end model itself in its Xbox game-console business. Now, Apple is working on other projects built on the same end-to-end model as the iPod: a media-playing cellphone and a home-media hub.
